Naast me zat mijn moeder, onze heupen tegen elkaar aangeklemd als waren we op die plek aan elkaar vastgegroeid. Aan de andere kant van mijn moeder zat Irina, ze leunde af en toe naar voren om haar hoofd uit het raampje bij buurman Wieslaw te steken en gilde dan naar alle auto\u2019s die ons tegemoet kwamen. Moeder sloeg haar met de vlakke hand op haar blote benen, om haar tot stilte te manen. Tevergeefs. Op onze schoot lagen vijf geelwitte vlaggen. Voor mij zat buurvrouw Pola, wijdbeens en met haar handen op het dashboard. Ze schreeuwde naar buurman Wieslaw dat hij op moest passen, voor een gat in de weg, een koe langs de kant of een oude man die plotseling overstak. We kwamen net terug van Warschau waar we de paus hadden gezien. Met de geelwitte vlaggen hadden we samen met duizenden mensen langs de kant van de weg staan zwaaien naar de pausmobiel. Overal langs de weg klonk het \u2018Barka\u2019 uit luidsprekers die aan lantaarnpalen waren opgehangen. Het was het lievelingslied van de paus. Irina had uit volle borst meegezongen. Ik zong niet graag. Mijn moeder en buurvrouw Pola stonden onder een paraplu die hen beschermde tegen de felle zon. Mijn moeder klaagde dat de paus veel te laat was en dat haar jurk te strak zat en dat ze amper wat kon zien. Buurman Wieslaw was op een groenstrook naast de weg op de grond gaan zitten en schilde een peer. Wat hem betreft mocht het hele circus zo snel mogelijk weer voorbij zijn. Mijn vader en mijn broer Milosz waren thuisgebleven. Zij hadden de paus twee jaar geleden nog gezien. Moeder had toen niet meegekund vanwege een verstuikte enkel. Bij elke stap gilde ze het uit van de pijn. Het was gebeurd toen ze het trapje naar de kelder afliep om aardappelen te halen. Honderdduizend keer al was ze dat trapje afgelopen om aardappelen te halen, of wortelen, of kool. En nu stapte ze mis. Ze slaakte een kreet en lag onder aan de trap in de kelder. Milosz was thuis geweest. Hij droeg haar naar boven en wilde de dokter halen. \u2018Geen dokter,\u2019 zei mijn moeder. Milosz drukte zachtjes op haar enkel en moeder schreeuwde het uit. \u2018Geen dokter!\u2019 Ze had er vier weken niet op mogen staan. Buurman Wieslaw zei niks. Hij vervloekte binnensmonds mijn vader die op het laatste nippertje besloten had om vandaag niet mee te gaan, waardoor we ineens met zijn allen in zijn piepkleine Fiat moesten. Mijn kleine geitje, noemde hij zijn auto liefkozend. Het ding was al vijftien jaar oud en in die tijd van rood naar vaalrood gekleurd, maar Wieslaw was er trots op alsof het de nieuwste Volkswagen was. Hij waste hem elke week en daarbij raakte hij zijn kleine geitje met meer tederheid aan dan ik hem ooit bij buurvrouw Pola heb zien doen. <\/p>\n
